Along with his first novel, The Name of the Rose, Umberto Eco has become one of the most famous writers alive. An internationally renowned philosopher, mediaevalist, historian, historian of art, linguist and professor of semiotics, he has been able to enrich his literary work with his comprehensive scholarly knowledge in different fields. The Name of the Rose has sold approximately 30 million copies, a proof that his method works. In addition to his career as a novelist and scientist, Umberto Eco has also published several cartoons (among those a history of philosophy called Filosofi in libertà), newspaper articles and even children’s books. Nerlich points out the relations between both countries and shows that a lot of Eco’s novels can be read as a dialogue with German philosophy.

In contrast to other introductions Erika Fischer-Lichte uses the concept of performance as a starting point to explain the basics of Theatre Studies, taking into account the current developments of the subject. Using specific examples, Fischer-Lichte describes the problems concerning the methodology of the subject. Two ‘excursions’ explore the difference between text and performance as well as between performance on stage and performance on screen. The second part of the book deals with the relation between Theatre Studies and other disciplines like cultural and intercultural performances from concerts, poetry slams and rituals to political assemblies and sports events. The book is rounded off with a bibliography, a glossary and an index.
