SPELL is a biennal periodical of the Swiss Association of University Teachers of English (SAUTE) and publishes a representative selection of papers given by SAUTE members and by distinguished visiting lecturers at symposia organized by the Association.

SPELL 9, Families, contains a selection of papers given at the 1995 SAUTE symposium in Berne, which addressed its theme from a variety of theorical and critical perspectives and over a wide range of texts, from the Old English version of Apollonius of Tyre to Finnegans Wake and Midnight´s Children. some of the papers collected in this volume discuss the use of family as a contentious social concept in american drama or Richardson´s Clarissa. some analyse (fake) genealogy in Renaissance founding legends, the failure of family and race in the american South, in Frankenstein, or African American fiction. Others demonstrate the ways in which, as analogy and metaphor, the concept of family continues to provide public and critical discourse with one of its controlling images.
