Orality and Literacy in Early Middle English

ab 48,00 € inkl. MwSt.
The bulk of the written literature in 12th/13th cantury Britain was in French and Latin, adressed to the French-speaking aristocracy and the clergy respectively. At the same time, written texts in English were at least remembered nostalgically in those refuges far enough away from the French-speaking centres.
In addition, there were undercurrents of oral literature both in English and British (i.e. Welsh, Cornish, and Breton), and British narrative prose was closely connected with the same Irish genre. The conference whose proceedings are published in the present volume was held under the auspices of the Sonderforschungsbereich "Orality and Literacy" at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität, Freiburg i.Br., early in July 1994. It was devoted to the study of literary cross-currents of orality and literacy. Inevitably, one focus of the conference was Layamon's "Brut" - which is the major piece of literature written in English at the time.
