This is the first volume of REAL devoted to one particular theme. The invitation to further the current debate on the relevance of the aesthetic has led to a wide spectrum of investigations and positions- from provisional surveys of the role of the aesthetic in various fields and contemporary schools of thought, through a probing of the discrimination of truth claims favouring the aesthetic, to more detailed analyses of particular conceptions, realizations and functions of the aesthetic. When this volume was planned some time ago, the aesthetic seemed to be neglected if not rejected by much of recent theory. Now that its actuality is becoming more widely acknowledged, this volume may help to assess both its submerged and its open role in contemporary thought.
