Three Models on a Rocking-Horse

A Comparative Study in Narratology
ab 38,00 € inkl. MwSt.
What is "nTEXT" (narrative text) and waht can narratology do for the analysis of nTEXT? This is the basic question answered in Three Models on a Rocking-Horse. After an introductory definition of nTEXT and of narratology within the frames of semiotics and textlinguistics, three different narratological models are presented and then applied and evaluated in the context of always the same short story, "The Rocking-Horse Winner" by D.H. Lawrence. The three models are Claude Bremond´s structuralist Logique du récit, a cognitive model developed by Robert-Alain de Beaugrande, and Roland Barthes S/Z. The criteria for the comparative evaluation of the models are their theoretical validity and their practical usefulness for the analysis of short narratives.
The study suggests that limited approaches to nTEXT should be combined in a broad, interdisciplinary theory for which aspects of semiotics, textlinguistics, structuralists narratology, cognitive science and literary study can all be relevant.
