Lexicology has changed quite dramatically over the past 30 years. The lexicon is no longer seen as an appendix to grammar containing all inexplicable irregularities but has taken centre stage in linguistic theory as the important interface between phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and cognition. The 32 papers collected in this volume reflect the state of the art in lexicology. The topics range from the fields of etymology, lexical change, morphology, word-formation and lexical semantics to approaches that integrate syntagmatic, pragmatic, socio-cultural and cognitive considerations into lexicological theory. A number of contributions also deal with problems in neighbouring fields - lexicography, vocabulary teaching and computational linguistics - and with possible applications of lexicological theory in these areas.
