Writing & Culture

SPELL 6 presents a selection of papers offered at a conference held in May 1991 at the University of Fribourg. Writing as a constituent element of cultures; writing as cultural icon; writing as an agent of cultural change; writing as a means of communication and of articulating differences between cultures. Thesse are perspectives from which a wide range of materials is studied in this volume, from Bede to Beckett, and from the American Southwest to Papua New Guinea.
