The medieval German studies’ series Bibliotheca Germanica was founded in 1951 by Friedrich Maurer, Heinz Rupp and Max Wehrli for the publisher Francke (at that time based in Bern; now Tübingen/Basel). Since its inception it was focused on basic research: text editions, monographs dealing with sources of text transmission and text-analytical studies with a cultural-historical scope. The series provides new insights into the characteristics of German premodern literature in relation to text production processes, literary genres and poetics by combining methodologies of text transmission, philological hermeneutics, cultural theory and comparative studies.
